I'm learning from personal experiences that the only thing that can come between you and your dreams is you. We want so badly to be successful, to have a big house, receive that promotion, and claim all that God has planned. but, in order for you to reach your full potential, you have to let go of a few things that can hold you back:
1. Doubt/Fear
How many times have you been shut down by naysayers and negative Nancy’s? How many dreams are deferred because you have programmed your minds to believe you’re not capable? And how much longer are you going to allow others to dictate what you can or can't do? Remember “God has not given us a spirit of fear.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Once you change your mindset to believe that you can and will achieve what you are a destined to, then fear and doubt no longer have power over you.
2. Inconsistency
Nothing happens overnight so if you want something badly enough, you must work at it, all day and everyday. Creating a routine renews our mindsets and puts you in a position to evolve and grow as you work towards your goals. Though the process is not always glamorous, it is key to success.. If you are not consistent in this aspect, then complacency will settle in. Avoid inconsistency at all costs and make an effort to stay on top of routines.
3. Lack of Accountability It's okay to let people know about your plans. Don't believe the hype when people say “less announcements, more accomplishments”. Talk about your dreams with boldness and expectancy for them to happen! The distinction to remember is to whom you disclose your dreams and aspirations too. Tell someone who will be honest with you and hold you accountable and confide in someone who you trust. Find a mentor or accountability partner. We all need that push to keep us going, it helps when we are on the brink of giving up.
4. Relying on validation/approval of others When we do things for the approval of our friends and family, but ignore what God is calling us to do, it's no wonder we are unable to shake the uneasiness in our spirits. The conflict is between our desire to be popular and our desire to be of purpose. Our success must not be contingent on someone's yes. We have to remember that we cannot please everyone as we pursue success, it’s not our job. Sometimes it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission; not everyone will be in agreement with God’s plan for your life.
5. Staying in your comfort zone
Stop being comfortable! Stop expecting opportunities to come to you. The difference between someone who was successful versus someone who wasn’t is their willingness to be stretched beyond comfort. You will never know what you are truly capable of if you stay within the parameters of your own convenience.
6. BONUS! Comparison
Your process is your process. My process is my process. Do not expect to hit the same milestones as anyone else at the same time. What is meant for you will come and while you prepare yourself for that success, be grateful for your own process that is exclusive to you only. In this day of Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook, be careful not to compare yourself with we think what people choose to share and filter. It’s okay to have a point of reference when determining what direction you want to take in life, but it becomes an issue when you undermine your own success.
As you embark on your individual journeys to success remember that you have a calling over your life that is unique to you. The hurdles and roadblocks along the way are not meant to break you down but build you up. Be intentional about your success and let go of any baggage that is weighing you down!
